Former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, standing beside a damaged yacht, Tuesday accused the Israeli navy of ramming the vessel to halt the delivery of medical supplies to the embattled Gaza Strip.
“Our mission was a peaceful mission,” McKinney told CNN after she and 15 others aboard the boat made it safely to the harbor in the Lebanese seaport of Tyre.
Are there any rules of civilized behavior that Israel is not allowed to break?
What would Washington do if Hamas, Hezbollah, the Moslem Brotherhood, or Iran were to ram and nearly sink a boat filled with Western civilians trying to deliver medicine to some beleaguered population? Do you think there might be some expression of outrage, some talk of preventive war?
How many young Arabs are growing up so angry and feeling so hopeless that they turn to violence as the result of these endless displays of barbarism by Western regimes that seem only to understand the language of force? We claim to be superior and criticize militant opponents for using force but undermine them when they accept our rules and participate in elections and ignore all the underlying issues that push them into violence in the first place. Exactly what lesson are we trying to teach young Arabs, anyway?
We should all be grateful to Cynthia McKinney for putting her life on the line (though she probably did not think Israel would actually go to the point of threatening her death) to show that some Westerners actually do understand something other than "the language of force."
